Karen Stokes Dance presents

Dance, Film, and Conversation at The Barn

HOUSTON, TX:  Karen Stokes Dance presents Dance, Film, and Conversation on October 1 & October 2, 2014, at 7:30pm at The Barn, with a special student preview on September 30.  Dance, Film, and Conversation is an evening of live performance and new dance for film projects by Karen Stokes Dance.

KSD premieres "Channel/1836," the launch project for the new "DEEP: Seaspace" initiative by Karen Stokes.  "Channel/1836" is inspired by events in Houston History that happened in 1836, while celebrating the industry of the Houston Ship Channel, the second largest port in the nation.  It is a 30- minute one-act film and live dance performance.

KSD will also present the public premiere of the duet "Dualities: Black & White", a new collaborative initiative with French composer Tiziana De Carolis (supported in part by the Texan French Alliance for the Arts). Last May, a salon style performance of “Black and White” was performed at the exhibition "Ailleurs/Elsewhere" at the French Consulate in Houston. Composer De Carolis and choreographer Karen Stokes plan to expand this duet to match the series of compositions De Carolis has created in her newly released CD "Dualities."

KSD will premiere “Gallery Construction 5,” the most recent of the Gallery Construction films that revolve around art installations in Houston.  “Gallery Construction 5,” featuring dancer Jessica Cortez, is housed in the shimmering light of Soo Sunny Park’s installation “Unwoven Light,”that was at the Rice University Gallery in summer 2013.  The company will also perform "Red Hourglass," a work that investigates the passage of time, the "tightwire of life," and departures as a natural cycle of life.

The audience will be invited to engage with the choreographer and dancers following the show.

Karen Stokes Dance premieres Dance, Film, and Conversation on Tuesday - Thursday, September 30-October 2, 2014, at 7:30pm at The Barn, 2201 Preston, Houston, TX., 77003. Ticket prices are $18 in advance / $20 at the door.
